On Monday, February 12th, Diet Cig will headline a show with Great Grandpa and The Spook School at the Aladdin Theatre in Portland.
Formed in upstate New York, the pop-infused punk duo features Alex Luciano with vocals and guitar and Noah Bowman on the drums. The band’s first full-length album, Swear to God I’m Good at This (2017), shares personal, yet relatable tales of angst, love, heartbreak, and growing up. The lyrics successfully untangle the complicated feelings that are woven into the space between adolescence and adulthood.
Diet Cig radiates a welcoming, unpretentious, fun-loving sound that makes you want to jam along- weird dance moves included. Their songs feature validating lines that celebrate eating tacos for breakfast and still not having a shower curtain. Noah’s frenzied drums perfectly compliment Alex’s sugary, unfiltered vocals and spirited strums. Though her vocals may be sweet, they are certainly not fragile. In several songs, Alex fiercely challenges the male-dominated music scene- and reminds us that you can still be punk in a skirt.
Diet Cig aren’t following any rules- they are making their own. Their playful, come-as-you-are music is sure to draw a crowd at Portland’s Aladdin Theatre next Monday.
