Azizi Gibson stopped by Portland’s Hawthorne Theater on his Protein Shake Tour with his openers Dior Worthy and Samuel the 1st earlier this week. It was an all ages event brought to you by Mike Thrasher Presents.
The self-proclaimed “Nintendo King” Azizi Gibson came out to preform at 9:45pm after his openers to a crowd eagerly awaiting his unique rap performance. He started his show with two of his most famous songs “DJ Khaled” off his album A New Life and “Freak” off his album Memories of the Reaper. Although his songs frequently covered sex, smoking and sometimes had dark sinister tones, Azizi Gibson was probably one of the nicest performers I’ve ever seen. After every song he would express gratitude to his fans for coming out and how much it meant to him that we were all there together sharing that moment with him.
During the 2nd half of Azizi Gibson’s 45 minute set, he would ask the crowd if they wanted faster or slower music, and after they inevitably picked more fast paced music he would then ask to pick between two songs. This is a huge pro to the smaller intimate venue setting versus the bigger stadiums where they have specific set lists that they preform in order in every city with no flexibility whatsoever. Azizi Gibson gave an amazing rap performance that was original and a lot of fun for fans of all ages.
