Friends — We’re doing something really special on this week’s Viking Twang. To help celebrate KPSU‘s 20th anniversary, and in support of our fundraising drive, the Twang has its first live guest.

It’s our friend Josh Cole, from the Josh Cole Bluegrass podcast and the new band Tenbrooks. He’s bringing a live show from Ralph Stanley, circa 1970, recorded right here in Portland! It’s one of Dr. Ralph’s best bands, with Jack Cook, Curly Ray Cline, and the incredible Keith Whitley.

Then, I get to record a new episode of the Josh Cole Bluegrass podcast, and I’m taking a live set from Steve Earle and the Bluegrass Dukes, live at the Station Inn in Nashville in November, 1999. It’s when Steve was touring in support of the landmark album The Mountain, which he recorded with the Del McCoury Band. This show features Tim O’Brien on mandolin, Darrell Scott on banjo, Casey Driessen on fiddle, and Dennis Crouch on bass.

Viking Twang is live Sunday morning at 9 a.m. at kpsu.org. If you can’t listen live, check out the Viking Twang Facebook page a little later that afternoon and I’ll post the link.

If you like the show and want to support student-run, non-commercial radio in Portland, you can make a contribution at the KPSU website. Remember that Portland State does not fully fund your college radio station.

The Josh Cole Bluegrass show usually is available on Thursday. Watch for the link on the Viking Twang Facebook Page.
