On July 20th, Oregon natives Flor played a show at Portland’s Holocene in celebration of the release of their debut album come out. you’re hiding. The show featured Portland local bands Talk Modern and Pleasure Curses as openers to set the tone for when Flor took the stage, the moment the entire crowd could not wait for. Flor played their debut album come out. you’re hiding in full (and also opened their set with a fan favorite “Get Behind This”) to a packed venue of their own family, friends, and fans. It was a special and important night for Flor, a band on the verge of breaking out, at one of Portland’s most intimate concert venues.
Flor played their hearts out on stage and gave it their all. This is one of the most genuine bands out there that loves what they do, don’t take it for granted, and have the best time on stage. A few songs into the set, Flor’s lead singer Zach Grace paused and spoke to the crowd commenting on exactly this, saying: “I’m having so much fun on stage and completely forgot I was working. I don’t even know if what I’m doing sounds good” (for the record, he sounded incredible). Flor’s high soaring instruments, massive production, and Zach’s soft voice are all exemplified and taken to a whole new level during their live shows; and it helps having a great crowd show up to the show. From the very first distinguishable synth poppy opening notes to “Get Behind This”, to the quiet closing guitar medley paired with Zach’s soft vocals of “overbehind”, the audience didn’t stop singing and dancing in unison with the band. Closing the set with “overbehind” was the most surreal way to end the night; it’s a catchy and beautiful song that means a lot to the band and fans, and was created specifically for audiences to sing along during. Since it was written, Flor has been performing, guiding, and teaching the words of “overbehind” to their fans during live shows. It’s all lead up to this moment: an intimate packed hometown show with what honestly looked like the entire audience softly swaying, smiling widely, and singing back the words of “overbehind” as loud as they could.
This is a band packed with talent that has the potential to make it and become a household name in music. They’re already touring with the likes of Halsey, Bleachers, Hayley Kiyoko, Great Good Fine OK, Paramore, Grouplove, and many more. This band is generating the buzz and gaining the attention of more and more fans and prominent artists. Their fanbase and reach has grown more quickly than I can even describe in the year or two since I personally first discovered them. Keep an eye on this band, and listen to / purchase their beautiful debut album come out. you’re hiding.
