Thundercat + NEW: Tycho = Chill Vibes

Written by on October 3, 2016

What’s good,

Comin at you this week with two records I recently discovered. The first is the latest LP from LA bassist Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner. This man has an incredible discography with dozens of features with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington, Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu, and Childish Gambino. His latest solo record “The Beyond / Where The Giants Roam” is quite short at only 16m. However, the ambience that Thundercat is able to produce is incredible for such a short time. The album immediately sets out to transport me to another realm, the tones of the bass are so smooth; coupled with the wash of white noise in the background, Thundercat’s voice comes through like a ray of sunshine in the mist of sound – much like the album cover would suggest. Not only is the ambience beautiful, Thundercat has a knack for writing incredibly catchy basslines and melodies. These are just some of the reason I’ve been bumping this record on repeat as of late. Great fall vibes, even better psychedelic ones.

The second album is the new record by Tycho, one of my favorite artists of all time. I’ve been anticipating this record ever since I saw him live in May (actually on my birthday, it was incredible). This new title “Epoch” is a dramatic ┬áchange of pace from Tycho’s older material. Although, singles he dropped before the album release definitely bridged the gap and now, it seems like a logical progression from his last album “Awake”. Vibes I get from this album are very mechanical and driving. Completely the opposite of his critically acclaimed album “Dive” which featured extremely ambient and wavy vibes. What I particularly enjoy about Tycho is that while the vibes are different, he doesn’t sacrifice his unique warm synth tones or amazing bass/guitar lines. The instrumentation on all of his records is extremely consistent and seeing his group perform live cemented how great of musicians they all are. Overall this album retains a similar sonic structure to his last two but puts a completely new spin on his world of electronic music.
