"Chant Master of American Yoga" sings Indian Devotional Chants in Portland, Oregon

(Portland, OR) -- On Tuesday, November 6 at 7:00 pm Maureen Clyne and Yoga Shala of Portland welcome internationally renowned Kirtan singer Krishna Das for a, "Flow of Grace" Kirtan at the First Congregational Church, 1126 SW Park Avenue in Portland. Doors open at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $25 per person in advance, $35 at the door. Children twelve and under admitted free. Advanced tickets are available online at www.prasadayoga.com and at Yoga Shala of Portland's two locations; 3249 SE Division and 3808 North Williams.
New York native Krishna Das is one of the most prominent Western singers of Kirtan, an ancient Indian form of devotional chanting. In 1968 Krishna Das met Ram Dass, who had recently returned from India, where he met his Guru Neem Karoli Baba. Inspired by Ram Dass' stories of his Guru, also known as Maharajii, Krishna Das went to India to meet the great teacher in person. He spent almost three years with Maharajii. Krishna Das was immediately drawn to India's devotional practice of Bhakti-Yoga, and began singing sacred chants under his Guru's guidance. When Krishna Das finally left India, Neem Karoli Baba asked him how he would serve him in the United States. Krishna Das replied, "I will sing to you in America".
Kirtan is India's ancient call and response form of devotional singing. The Kirtan leader sings a line of a chant in Sanskrit that usually includes the name of an Indian deity and in response, the group repeats the line back. Krishna Das says that, "By constant repetition of these names, gradually but inevitably the (divine) presence hidden in the names begins to reveal itself within us." No previous knowledge of Sanskrit is required to appreciate the beauty of these chants. According to Rick Rubin, who produced three of Krishna Das' albums, audience members "connect with the chants, even if they don't understand the words".
Hailed by The New York Times as the "Chant Master of American Yoga", Krishna Das created a unique sound by blending ancient Hindu and Vedic chants with a variety of American musical traditions that include rock and roll, Appalachian folk music, gospel, jazz and punk. Maureen Clyne, who has worked with Krishna Das since 2002 says, "Krishna Das' music goes straight to your heart. His deep, soulful voice draws you towards a place of inner joy and uplifting celebration. Kirtan with Krishna Das is a yoga-style tent revival where people literally sing their hearts out and connect with their essential nature."
Krishna Das' "Flow of Grace" Kirtan is jointly presented by Maureen Clyne and Yoga Shala of Portland.
